Training Courses
These training courses will be specific to functional areas and branch of
service to show actual forms and incorporate any unique items within each
service. These courses are intended to be very specific in nature, training
each user in the precise procedures and tools that they will need to perform
their job. The composition and course content of these courses will be DAU
compliant.
DMSMS Fundamentals
The Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) Fundamentals course is designed to be a working level overview of DMSMS issues. There are six lessons contained within the course. They are:
- Lesson 1 - Overview of DMSMS
- Lesson 2 - Combating the DMSMS Problem
- Lesson 3 - Reporting, Measuring, and Predicting
- Lesson 4 - Guidance and Reference Sources
- Lesson 5 - DMSMS Tools for the Program Manager
- Lesson 6 - Successful DMSMS Management Models
This course is designed to give the learner the basics. While they will not be experts upon completion of the course, the learner will have a good basic working knowledge of the history, the issues, the tools, current initiatives and have seen real examples of successful proactive DMSMS programs. They will understand why standardization of policy and procedure within the DMSMS community is so important and become familiar with many other topics. One of the most important tools they will learn about is the DOD DMSMS Knowledge Sharing Portal.
This is a service and discipline neutral, 8-hour instructor led training course with no pre-requisites for attendance.
The three-hour Computer Based Training (CBT) can be reviewed or taken for continuous learning credit at the Defense Acquistion University virtual campus.

DMSMS for Executives
This course is designed to bring DMSMS Fundamental information to the executive or program manager who needs to understand how their operations are impacted. There are concerns about reliability; maintainability, funding, policy procedure and staffing that are significantly different in perspective than when viewed from the subordinate perspective. DMSMS impacts all of the mentioned areas and can cause cost overruns, inadequate personnel availability, unexpected unscheduled maintenance and inefficiencies in the supply chain if not properly considered. There are six lessons contained within the course. They are:
- Lesson 1 - Management Buy-in
- Lesson 2 - Teams, Tools, & Training
- Lesson 3 - Data and the BOM
- Lesson 4 - Financial Resources
This is a service and discipline neutral, 3-hour instructor led training course with no pre-requisites for attendance.
The one-hour Computer Based Training (CBT) can be reviewed or taken for continuous learning credit at the Defense Acquistion University virtual campus.

DLA DMSMS Essentials
This course provides an overview of DLA DMSMS capabilities, cataloging and standardization as it applies to component research and DMSMS, using the DLA representatives, weapons coding, software tools and other DLA specific abilities. There is a strong emphasis on understanding technical drawings and how they translate into cataloging codes and item-of-supply requirements. Interpreting the total-item record (basic codes and meanings) including Reference Number Category Codes (RNCC), Reference Number Variations Codes (RNVC) for item identification, Item Standardization Codes (ISC), the DLA DMS IST and other DLA fundamentals as specifically applied to DMSMS. There are 5 lessons in this course. They are:
- Lesson 1 - Overview of DLA Essentials
- Lesson 2 - DLA DMSMS Involvement
- Lesson 3 - Basic Component Research
- Lesson 4 - Performance Based Logistics
- Lesson 5 - Business System Modernization
This is a service and discipline neutral, 6-hour instructor led training course. While there are no pre-requisites for this course, the DMSMS Fundamentals Course is highly recommended before attempting this course.
The three-hour Computer Based Training (CBT) can be reviewed or
taken for continuous learning credit at the Defense Acquisition University
virtual campus.

DMSMS Case Studies
This course uses several successful programs as the model for four make-believe systems that all have different approaches to proactive DMSMS management. The idea is to let the student review specific problems and circumstance sets and then be presented with a series of possible solutions. The student will compare their choices and rationales against the program’s solutions to the same set of circumstances. It will also present the difference between a proactive program vs. a developed solution to solve a long-term problem identified and resolved before it became a major problem. There are no correct or incorrect answers, and the interaction within the teams helps the awareness of different perspectives on DMSMS as it affects multiple professional disciplines.
This is a service and discipline neutral, 4-hour instructor led training course. While there are no pre-requisites for this course, the DMSMS Fundamentals Course and DLA DMSMS Essentials courses are highly recommended before attempting this course.
The two-hour Computer Based Training (CBT) can be reviewed or
taken for continuous learning credit at the Defense Acquisition University
virtual campus.

DMSMS for the Technical Professional
The DMSMS for Technical Professionals course is targeted at the Engineers, Equipment Specialists, Product Specialists, and technically-oriented logisticians who need to know how to perform basic Proactive DMSMS Management. This course is focused on the tacit type knowledge that is possessed by an aging workforce and is rapidly disappearing, also providing you with the opportunity to gain a more detailed level of understanding, some hands-on experience and the high-level basics of the technical side of Proactive DMSMS Management.
This course will not teach you how to operate commercially available “predictive tools”; but, it will show you how to set up the basic bill-of-materials (BOM) load spreadsheet and establish the correct part number (P/N) to national stock number (NSN) relationships. It will couple this knowledge with an elementary examination of current processes, policies, and procedures used by the technical professionals working within the acquisition, logistics, and engineering disciplines (of the DMSMS community) to practice Proactive DMSMS Management. There are 3 lessons in this course. They are:
- Lesson 1 - DMSMS in System Acquisition
- Lesson 2 - Basic Proactive DMSMS Management
- Lesson 3 - Exercises
This is a service and discipline neutral, 6-hour instructor led training course. To gain the most benefit from this course, DMSMS Fundamentals and DLA DMSMS Essentials are highly recommended.
DMSMS for the Logistics Professional
The DMSMS issue affects Item Managers, Logistics Specialists, and other
non-technical logistics professionals. Each of the disciplines has specific
responsibilities that are affected by DMSMS. This course will provide an
insight to the problems, symptoms, solutions and interfaces with other
disciplines (technical).
The DMSMS Fundamentals course should be completed first. This course will
address specific logistics issues directly affected by, caused by or related to
DMSMS. Examples would include stock, storing and issuing DMS assets, proactive
planning for unexpected requirements, DOD Knowledge Sharing Portal tools and
services and other issues. This will be a service and discipline neutral
course.
It is envisioned that this will be an six-hour instructor led and three-hour
CBT course.
DMSMS for the Acquisition Professional
The DMSMS issue affects item Managers, Logistics Specialists, and other
non-technical logistics professionals. Each of the disciplines has specific
responsibilities that are affected by DMSMS. This course will provide an
insight to the problems, symptoms, solutions and interfaces with other
disciplines (technical).

Future Course Development
Other Courses will be developed as tasked or requested. The next planned group
of courses will center around service and other federal agency DMSMS
requirements that are unique to that service because of policy, equipment or
special program requirements. While they will initially center on fundamentals,
discipline oriented courses (Technical, Logistics and Acquisition) are
envisioned. Sample titles are:
- DMSMS Fundamentals for the US NAVY & MARINE CORPS
- DMSMS Fundamentals for the US ARMY
- DMSMS Fundamentals for the US AIR FORCE
- DMSMS Fundamentals for FEDERAL AGENCIES
